Wisdom teeth are the permanent teeth that are located at the back corner of the mouth. They are seen in adults, usually between the age of 17 to 25. But having said that, some might never develop wisdom teeth. However, if these teeth don't have any room to grow, then it results in an enormous amount of pain, infection, and it might even cause other dental problems as well.

In conditions like these, it is necessary to remove these teeth, and this surgical process will be done by either a dentist or an oral surgeon.

Many people encounter the problem of impacted wisdom teeth because less to no room is available for the teeth to grow naturally. If you are someone who is encountering such a problem, then it is advised to consult your dentist to take his recommendation. If the impact is too deep, then he will insist you see an oral surgeon.

The procedure of extracting the wisdom teeth is simple and can be performed in a day. Initially, you will be subjected to anesthesia, and then the dentist makes an incision in the gum tissue to expose the bone and the tooth. After that, he removes the bone, which is blocking access to the tooth.

Depending on the condition of the tooth, he takes the decision of removing it in pieces by breaking it.

Once the tooth is removed, then he cleans the area so as to flush out the remains of the tooth and bone. Finally, he stitches the wound. In order to stop the bleeding, he places the gauze over the area.

Once the tooth is extracted then, here are some of the instructions that you must follow:

  • Avoid excessive spitting as it may dislodge the blood clot from the socket.
  • After the surgery, you will feel some pain, so hold a cold packet against your jaw, which will help subside the pain.
  • Use ice packets against your jaw.
  • It is advised to eat soft food such as apple sauce for a day after the surgery.
  • Avoid smoking for at least 4 days after the surgery.

The wisdom teeth extraction process can be painful for some people, but there is nothing to worry about, especially when you get it done by an experienced oral surgeon.

We at iSmile Dental Group have housed a plethora of oral surgeons who are well experienced and can perform the process by taking good care of the patient.
